Article: Bunny bowl

Bunny bowl

Made using our limited edition Easter Kit, but can be made using our Air-dry kit or Junior kit.

Please note that this is not food safe as its not fired in a professional kiln, so leave the foil on the eggs when displaying in the bowl.

Instructions

Steps:

    1. Divide your block of clay into half
    2. Roll half your clay into a smooth ball, roughly the size of a tennis ball.
    3. Make the bowl - push your thumb into the centre of the ball, about halfway down — don't go all the way through.
    4. Pinch and rotate — using your thumb inside and fingers outside, gently pinch and turn the ball to slowly open up the bowl shape. Keep the walls even as you go.
    5. Shape the bowl until you're happy with the depth and width. Gently tap on the surface to create a flat bottom then smooth with a damp sponge.
    6. Form the ears and head — pinch two small mounds of clay from the top of the ball and gently pull and shape them upward into ear shapes. Roll a ball of clay for the head. Join them together and blend.
    7. Add feet — roll 2 small balls and press them gently onto the base so the bowl sits level. Blend with paddle tool so that they are joined well.
    8. Join the head to your bowl - score the front of the bowl above the feet and add the head on. Add clay bits on the side and blend, so that the head is attached well.
    9. Add the tail — roll a small ball, score and attach to the bowl and blend it onto the back.
    10. Smooth everything with a little water and your fingers and a damp sponge.
    11. Leave to dry with a plastic bag over for 2 days to slow dry then remove and fully dry for at least a week or two.

      PAINTING

  • Be super careful when painting, as they are fragile.
  • Apply your paint in thin coats using your brush. This helps prevent cracking or peeling. Let each layer dry fully before adding the next. Avoid thick globs of paint — they take longer to dry and are more likely to peel.
  • Don’t paint all the way to the bottom edge. Leave a small unpainted border at the very base of your piece.

    This helps:

    - Prevent the paint from sticking to your work surface
    - Stop peeling when you lift or move it later

  • Once the paint is completely dry, apply two coats of sealer. Let each coat dry before applying the next, using the same technique above to avoid sticking to your surface.
