Important information
Clay must be fired twice in a kiln to become ceramic (food and water safe):
1. Bisque Firing (hardens the clay) - to 1000°C
2. Glaze Firing (melts the glaze into a glassy finish) - to 1220°C (Cone 6)
Our clay is a stoneware blend and can be safely fired to Cone 6.
Please note: Pottery is not strong until it has been fired. When transporting your precious raw work it is best not to stack heavier, thicker pieces on top of lighter or thinner ones as this could cause cracking in the thinner pieces. This is a common hazard especially for plates. Also to avoid chipping, we recommend packing your work with fabric, such as old towels, to prevent the raw clay knocking against each other in the box.
How to Apply Modeletto Glaze
1. Shake the glaze jar well before use.
2. Apply 1–2 thin coats with your brush: - 1 coat = translucent - 2 coats = opaque.
- Do not apply more than 2 coats and do not apply glaze to the bottom of your mug. Please ensure that the bottom, and a 5mm margin up the side, of your pieces are completely glaze free.
3. Let each coat dry fully before applying the next.
4. Wipe the base clean with a damp sponge before firing.
Painting a Design Only?
If you’re only painting part of your piece, ask your kiln studio to apply a clear glaze after bisque firing. Note: Some clear glazes may not bond well with our clay and could crack. For best results, glaze the whole piece using Modeletto glaze.
